12/1at TurpinL47-640-10-0Turpin took an early lead and stretched it to 17 (21-38) by the intermission.  The Firebirds played them even in the second half but the damage had already been done.  Jared McCorkle scored a team-high 14  points but was the only West player able to achieve double figures. Stats
12/8Oak Hills   L 46-48    0-2    0-1The Firebirds had the cities 6th ranked team, Oak Hills, on the ropes but couldn’t keep them there. With only 2:39 remaining in the game West had the Highlanders down by 9 (42-33), and were standing at the free throw line with a 1 & bonus situation that could have pushed the lead to double figures. That free throw opportunity was squandered starting the fatal slide to defeat. In the final 2.5 minutes, the Firebirds could only make 4 of 9 freebies while Oak Hills made a perfect 5 of 5 from the charity stripe with the final two coming just seconds before the game ended to set the final score at 46-48. Max Kiker led the Firebirds in scoring with 13. He made 4 of 8 from beyond the three-point arc, two coming from NBA range. Carter Combs came off the bench to tally 10 points in 13 minutes. West outrebounded the Highlanders 31 to 26 but had 12 turnovers to Oak Hills 6 which resulted in a 6 point (17-11) scoring advantage for Oak Hills. Stats
12/9Winton Woods W 46-45 1-2 0-1The Firebirds brought the home crowd to their feet with a late-game charge that yielded them their first win of the new season. Thirteen points down (28-41) and with less than six minutes remaining the Firebirds came surging back. Contrary to their previous nights’ loss when fourth-quarter free throw misses were their undoing the free throw stripe was the Firebirds friend tonight. Cameron Schaffer started a 10-0 scoring run with two made free throws and Jared McCorkle ended that run with two made free throws, leaving the Firebirds a manageable three points behind (40-43) with three minutes left in the contest. With the score tied, and only 1.8 seconds remaining Spencer Farthing was at the line with on free throw remaining and made it to seal the victory. Jared McCorkle was the games high scorer with 12 points and also contributed a team-high two assists. The Firebirds battled to a 34-25 rebounding advantage over the taller Warriors. That led to a 7-6 advantage in second-chance points, exactly the margin of final victory. Mitch Wagner pulled down 5 boards to lead West in rebounding. Stats
12/12at Princeton L 40-75 1-3 0-2A tall (6’ 5” average for starting five) and talented Viking team sprinted out to a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes. They used their size to smother the West inside game by blocking 5 shots and not giving the Firebirds anything in close. The Firebirds put up six more shots (47 to 41) than Princeton but shot a dismal 27.7% compared to Princeton’s 68.3%. The only Firebird to meet with much scoring success. was Max Kiker who scored a team-leading 16 points. Kiker made 6 of 10 field goals with 4 of 6 coming from beyond the three-point arc. Stats

West opened against Hamilton Heights Christian Academy, (Chattanooga, Tennessee).  The Hawks were playing in their third game of the season as they entered the evening with a 2-0 record and ranked #5 in the country by USA Today girls basketball.   West led by a point (23-22) at the intermission and led (27-26) after the fifth lead change of the game occurred at the 3:54 mark in the third stanza.  At that point, the Hamilton Hawks used their superior height (starting team 6’+ average, with a 6’ 7” post player) to wear down the Firebirds and began to pull away.  Abby Prohaska recorded a scoring/rebounding double-double (13 pts./10 reb.).  Freshman Kailyn Dudukovich scored 8 points and picked off 3 rebounds in her high school debut.  Sarah Jones and Madisyn Oxley each dished off a team-high 3 assists.

W60-3125-2Regional Semi Final (State final 16) Walnut Hills scored the first two points of the game followed by a 19 point first quarter avalanche being dropped on them by the Firebirds. When the opening stanza ended West led 21-7 and were well on their way to triggering the 35 point lead mercy rule for the fourth time this year.  Jasmine Ballew was the games leading scorer with 15 points.  Abby Prohaska was not far behind with 13 points and was credited with a game high 4 steals. Stats

    L51-5425-3Regional Championship (State final 8)
This was another typical Mason/Lakota West battle in that it included 7 ties and 11 lead changes.  The Firebirds scored first, but the Comets led by one after the first quarter ended. West came back to lead by one after the third quarter ended, and so it went on into the final quarter.  West missed a potential go ahead shot with 1:12 remaining only to see Mason recapture the lead, 46-48, at the 1:05 mark. An Ally Haar trey later got the Firebirds within one, 49-50 with 19 seconds remaining. Quick scoring exchanges left the Comets  still further in front 51-54 and with under 10 seconds to go but the firebirds had the ball.  Mason quickly fouled Abby Prohaska to take away the prospect of a Firebird trey sending the game into overtime. The game ended with no further scoring.  Prohoska played the full 32 minutes, was the  games leading scorer with 21 points, grabbed a game high 10 rebounds, dished out a team best 4 steals, and upped her school steals records by 1 in her Firebird farewell appearance.
