Lakota West Firebirds

The Lakota West Firebirds soar at State Championships!

This past weekend, the Lakota West Track and Field team made history at the State Championships! With 23 athletes competing in various events, the Firebirds delivered a weekend filled with outstanding performances.

Day 1 kicked off with a bang! The girls’ 4x800m relay team of Kaitlin Kaszubski, Prashi Vatsal, Ava Shepard, and Amane Ohhashi set a season-best time, finishing a strong 11th place. The boys’ 4x200m relay team (Kenyon Norman, Sam Afari, Kolyn Ogletree, and Joel Nimoh) also ran a personal best, narrowly missing the podium.

The excitement continued with the boys’ 4x100m relay team shattering the school record with a time of 41.58, securing their spot in the finals. To wrap up Day 1, the girls’ 4x400m relay team (Saniya Taylor, Ayana Johnson, Alyese Caldwell-Downing, and Ava Claggett) put on a gutsy performance, finishing just off the podium.

Day 2 was truly historic for the Firebirds. Jonah Dangel cemented his legacy as a Lakota West legend with a 7th-place finish in the pole vault. Dangel leaves behind a remarkable career, holding both the Lakota District record and a State Championship placement.

Sophomore Jun McKnight delivered an unprecedented performance, competing in all three seated events (100m, 400m, and 800m) and medaling in each! Jun’s determination and resilience, battling through injury, made her a champion and etched her name in Lakota West history.

The weekend’s crowning achievement was the boys’ 4x100m relay team’s epic performance in the finals. The quartet of Kenyon Norman, Amare Minor, Rece Mason, and Joel Nimoh sprinted their way into Lakota West history, claiming the State Championship title!

Kaitlin Kaszubski capped off the Championships with a solid performance in the 800m.

This phenomenal meet marks a historic season for the Lakota West Track and Field family. With most of the State competitors returning next year, the Firebirds are poised to keep soaring!

Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches for an incredible season!
