Renneker Award
The Renneker Award honors the memory of Kristin Renneker, a member of the Lakota Class of 1992. This award and an accompanying scholarship have been given annually since Kristen’s death in an automobile accident in January of 1992. Kristen was a starter on three varsity basketball teams and a letter winner on two varsity soccer teams. She earned All-Greater Miami Conference Academic Awards in both sports. Kristin was also widely respected for giving freely of her time to numerous service activities for the betterment of her school and her community. This award is given at the end of each school year to the senior female athlete in each Lakota high school who best exemplifies the positive qualities of athleticism, academic achievement, and community service for which Kristin Renneker was known. The Renneker Scholarships, each currently in the amount of $2000, are made possible by the generosity of the many friends of Kristin Renneker and her family.
Historical Note: An Evergreen tree was planted in Kristin’s Memory just inside the entrance to the Hopewell soccer stadium where it may be seen today along with a plaque denoting it as a memorial to her. Hopewell was the Lakota home soccer field for both Kristin and her teammate Laura Hicks, the first Renneker Award winner. Hicks was in the same automobile accident that took Kristin’s life but recovered to finish the 1991 basketball season earning All GMC First Team and All GMC Academic honors. A plaque outside Lakota West’s Main Street Arena lists the names of the Lakota West winners shown below.
